With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Basil Karim Bacchus on August 25, 2024. Born on August 24, 1931, Karim’s final moments were surrounded by the warmth of his loving children and cherished grandchildren, reflecting a life filled with deep connections and vibrant experiences.

In his youth, Basil’s remarkable talent in table tennis earned him recognition and admiration for his competitive spirit and skill. His lifelong passion for cricket was a defining aspect of his character, providing him with immense joy and a strong sense of community. Basil’s enthusiasm for the sport, along with his larger-than-life presence left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Basil’s social nature and zest for life were evident in his many friendships, which he valued dearly. As a founding member of the Kaieteur Cricket Club and a regular at J’ouvert mornings, he truly embraced community, celebration, and the art of living the good life. His wit, charm, and the countless good times shared with friends and family are a testament to the joy he brought into the lives of others.

Basil is survived by his wife, Janet Bacchus and his legacy endures through his children: Kenny (Barbara), Ray (Giatry), Lynette (George), Kathy (Azard), Donna (Michael), and Roxanne (Kenny). He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren: Raeann, Sparkle (deceased), Krystle, Kandie, Rachael, Kathy-Ann, Jonathan, Roanna, Koryse, Renee, and Zachary, as well as five great-grandchildren.

Basil Karim Bacchus’s wisdom, humor, and love will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we remember him, we celebrate a life richly lived and honor the enduring love he shared with his family and friends. In his memory, we take solace in the many lives he touched and the lasting impact of his presence.

Raéann Bacchus

Papa, is it weird I still come to this page? I already know the answer, yes it’s weird. I just don’t know where else to go to find you. Perhaps if I come back to the last place I left you, I’ll get a sign that’ll point me to where you are. We knew it was going to be hard when you left… I didn’t know it would feel so hollow though. Everything seems so pointless now. How are your mom & dad? Do they know us? What’s it like up there? Maybe you could drop by sometime. I don’t just miss you, a piece of me is missing. Dad misses you terribly too. I think we are both just now half versions of ourselves. Every day since you left, has been harder than the day before. I love you; nothing will change that, not even this new lopsided world.
